Throughout the 1990s my paintings were strongly influenced by abstract images based on concrete mathematical and geometrical concepts. I studied the bold juxtaposition of color and shapes emphasized by Russian born abstract expressionist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and the moving-in-time forms rendered by French cubist Georges Braque (1882-1963). This influence is evident in my Music series of paintings. Eventually, these explorations evolved into a series of works influenced by the rebellious attitude behind the intricate and chaotic drip works of American abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). I continue to explore abstract expressions of emotion and ideas in my Spectra category where color alone provides the structure. A breakthrough in self-realization during 2001 was accompanied by a new focus on stone carving, wood and metal sculpture. I began to incorporate oxidized copper sheets and organic material (acquired on various south Pacific island excursions) into the Intrinsic acrylic paintings and wall sculptures of primitive masks and stone figures. A series of mixed media paintings emerged based on my fundamental observations of human behavior; the function and pervasiveness of Rituals in all societies, the commitment and endurance required to overcome obstacles, and Reflections on our human history of aggression. While these new works may be regarded as intense compositions, they also passionately reveal the timelessness of human emotion. A series of mixed media paintings soon emerged based on my fundamental observations of human behavior; the function and pervasiveness of rituals in all societies, the commitment and endurance required to overcome obstacles, and our history of aggression. |
